Why I Hosted a Group Cruise!
And Why You Should Too!
Cruising was the best trip solution for bringing a diverse group together with different interests. Some of us spent the whole day lounging by the pool, while others (who can’t sit still, like me) bounced around different activities all day. A cruise allowed us to do our own thing while still meeting for meals, shows, and group activities without the stress of coordinating!
We chose an MSC cruise because it was the most affordable option (we were on a budget), at just $500 a person for a weeklong trip, including a drink package! It was the best deal I’ve ever seen. Since we live close to NYC, sailing from Brooklyn in November was convenient, even if the first day was chilly. Here’s a look at our itinerary and what you can expect on a cruise like this:
Itinerary & Highlights
-
Watch the NYC skyline fade away in the distance as you sail past the Statue of Liberty and under the Verrazano Bridge. It is a terrific way to see NYC and start a cruise.
Explore the ship, find your soon-to-be favorite hangout spots, grab a drink, and unpack.
Make sure to sign up for shows (they fill up fast!)
Enjoy a sit-down dinner with the group, followed by live entertainment, music, and late-night dancing (you will find it hard to squeeze in sleep on an activity-packed cruise!)
-
Get up and start the day with a morning walk or run on the outdoor track - this became our daily tradition!
Grab breakfast as a group, either at the buffet or dining hall.
Lounge by the pool or check out onboard activities (trivia, dance classes, live music).
Enjoy watching (or joining) challenges and group dances by the main pool; it is also a great way to start to meet other fellow cruisers.
Squeeze time for sunset photos before dinner.
End the night with a show, casino games, or dancing
-
You can either enjoy the day on the cruise or venture out to Port Canaveral for excursions such as…
Head to Cocoa Beach for a laid-back beach day.
Explore the Kennedy Space Center for some history & science learning.
Visit Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, a peaceful sanctuary for birds and other wildlife.
-
MSC’s private island was a highlight!
Swim, snorkel, or relax at one of the many beaches.
Walk to the far end of the island for a quieter escape.
Take a lighthouse tour, then grab a drink at the Lighthouse Bar.
Enjoy fresh Bahamian cuisine at the outdoor food court.
Snorkel among the restored coral reefs (bring your own goggles for a free experience!).
-
Explore the vibrant streets of Nassau and shop at the Straw Market.
Visit Cable Beach or Paradise Beach for crystal-clear waters.
Opt for an excursion to Blue Lagoon Island for a secluded beach experience.
-
Get spa treatments, attend shows, or attend different activities.
Explore the hidden lounges & quiet spots for reading or relaxing.
Do a group scavenger hunt around the ship to discover the best views & experiences!
Make dinner reservations for one of the specialty restaurants (extra cost but worth it for a special night!).
Make sure to check the themes before cruises & dress up as one of the themes & take a group picture!
-
Enjoy one last breakfast on board.
Say goodbye to your cruise crew, and tip if they gave excellent service (as they usually do).
Disembark and head home, already thinking about your next trip.
Making the Most of a Group Cruise
A cruise is what you make of it! Here are fun ideas to maximize your experience:
Start a morning tradition – coffee at a specific spot or a sunrise walk.
Find the best hangout spots – lounges, hidden bars, and quiet relaxation areas.
Do a scavenger hunt on day one – get to know the ship and find the best photo ops.
Scope out the best sunset views – and grab drinks before dinner.
Meet a crew member – get to know their story, and you might get insider tips!
Sign up for shows early – they fill up fast, and you don’t want to miss them.
FAQs About Cruising
Is the drink package worth it?
YES – if you plan to have at least 3+ drinks a day. Otherwise, pay as you go.
What’s the food like?
There are plenty of included options! You get an assigned dining hall experience for dinner, and the buffet is open most of the day. Specialty dining costs extra, but I found the included meals to be great!
Do I need a passport?
No, if your cruise starts and ends at the same U.S. port, you can use a birth certificate and photo ID. But having a passport is recommended.
What if I get seasick?
Book a mid-ship cabin on a higher deck for more stability.
Bring Dramamine or use sea sickness bands (they help!).
The ship is large, so most people adjust quickly.
Do I need to tip?
Yes! Gratuities are automatically added (before or after the trip), but tipping extra for great service is encouraged. Crew members work long hours and go above and beyond!
Will I have internet?
No, unless you purchase a Wi-Fi package. With a Wi-Fi package, you cannot access cell service, so you can use WhatsApp or check with your phone provider for international roaming options.
Should You Book a Group Cruise?
If you want a stress-free trip where everyone can enjoy different activities while still spending time together, YES! Cruises are great for friend groups, families, and even solo travelers who want an easy way to explore new places.
